Virginia State Ranking System

DETAILS - Tuesday, June 13, 2006

The CVRA ranking system is a points based system which takes into account the size of the draw in each division of a tournament, the quality of each draw, and wins against higher ranked players.

The Standard Point Scale is the basis for points awarded in all divisions. This is a sliding point scale with 3 levels to differentiate between the number of participants. This allows more points to be awarded for the larger draws. All first round losers receive 5 points regardless of the number of participants.

Bonus Points are awarded to players in each division who beat an opponent ranked at least 5 positions ahead of them. A Bonus win is worth 10 points regardless of the level of the draw. Only one bonus per division per tournament will be awarded (i.e. if the lowest ranked player wins a division, he/she will not get bonus points for each win in the draw that would qualify for bonus points).

The Power Point Scale is used when a minimum number of top ranked players participate in a division. These points are 1.5 times greater than the Standard Points to reward “quality” wins in a tougher division. In order for this scale to apply, a LEVEL I division must have 3 of the top 5 ranked players as participants, a LEVEL II division must have 5 of the top 8 players as participants, and a LEVEL III division must have 6 of the top 10 players as participants. Even if a division qualifies for the Power Point Scale, Bonus wins will still be worth 10 points and all first round losers receive 5 points regardless of the number of participants.  This point scale will also be used for the State Singles Championship regardless of the number of top ranked players in the draws.

POINTS - Tuesday, June 13, 2006

Every participant accumulates points for each division played in all tournaments. Points are active for a 12 month period. Points are dropped from the totals at the beginning of the 13 month after they were earned. This results in a 12 month running total which provides the rankings in each division. The rankings will be updated monthly (or as appropriate based on the tournament schedule).

In cases where divisions are combined, points are earned based on the placement in the combined division and are awarded in the division the participant entered.

All out of state players who participate in a CVRA sanctioned tournament are awarded points and are included in the state rankings.

RANKING INQUIRIES - Thursday, June 01, 2006

Please send all comments and questions regarding the State Ranking System or your points and ranking in any division to the Rankings Coordinator. All comments and questions will be addressed in a timely manner.

Skill Division Advancement Criteria

A player who attains a certain “level of success” competing in any skill division during the season (partial or entire) is required to move up to a higher division. This “level of success” is defined by the following criteria:

  • Winners of a skill division at the Virginia State Championship tournament if there were more than 8 participants in the draw.
  • Winners of a skill division in a Regional or National  tournament.
  • Outright winners of a skill division in the CVRA Championship Series. Outright winners are those who earned the most points in that division – not those who won a prize with the second or third most points because the top point earner did not qualify.
  • Finishes in first place in the state rankings with 300 or more points.

If any of these criteria are met the player must move up to a higher skill division at the beginning of the next season.  The player is not required to move up at the time these criteria are first met during the season.

When a player is required to move up in a division, their ranking points will be dropped from the division they are no longer eligible to play in. This will be reflected in the first rankings update of the new season.

A player may petition the Board to reinstate their eligibility to a lower skill division once they have competed in a higher division for an entire season.  The petition should be sent to the Board via email:  board@cvra.org
