Photo News - Sunday, April 01, 2007
The temperature reached 100 in Death Valley on March 10 – 18 during my family vacation, and I enjoyed every degree difference between that and the late winter cold snap you all had then. Did you miss me? Several of you have and let me know by e-mail. Rest assured, I worked diligently on the photos from the Virginia State Singles Championship when we got back, and you can see the finished galleries by clicking here.
Speaking of the Virginia State Singles Championship, I would like to thank team CVRA for the recognition that Sunday. It really meant a lot to me. Your CVRA Photographer, Ken

Photographing Racquetball Tournaments - Sunday, February 25, 2007
My recent article on racquetball photography is available on line by clicking on this paragraph, if you missed it in the CVRA newsletter. In it, I reveal secrets that have taken me years to learn for capturing the action of our exciting sport. There is nothing better than catching the magical split second that only a photograph can record. Of course, it takes a camera to make a photograph, and I often get questions on equipment. For example, during the Dave Sarmadi Mitsubishi Racquetball Classic held in Roanoke, I was asked about the Nikon D40 camera. The D40 is a great camera for starting out. The problem with it, however, is that it is limited to the newer lenses called Nikon's AF-S line and Sigma's HSM line. I learned this when I checked out the recent D40 review at www.bythom.com . The consequences are that my cheap, trusty, 50mm f1.4 lens will not work with it. By the way, to use the best lens for racquetball right now, my recommendation is the Sigma 30mm f 1.4. Check out this link (click on this) for a great review of the D40. On the high end, Canon has just announced its latest professional sports camera. Click on this for info on the Canon EOS-1D Mark III. Another high-end camera from Nikon, the D3H, is rumored to be in the works, but it has not been announced yet. Just bring a bag full of money for these top-of-the-line professional photographic tool. Your CVRA Photographer, Ken

Christmas Classic Photography - Monday, December 18, 2006 - Friday, February 16, 2007
The Christmas Classic was a record-breaking event for me based on the number of photographs taken (10,000). It also took the longest time to prepare for the web due to holiday guests and travel. All the photos are now on line, and I have to say that I enjoyed going through them as I hope you will too. Looking at those photos reminded me how awesome it was to have the WPRO in Northern VA. The WPRO is a real class act. Thanks to Shannon for all she did to help us make it happen. Thanks also go out to the tournament director Karen Denu, support team, Bill Milbach, Russ Bruns, and Wayne Toyne, as well as the sponsors who contributed the required resources. You are all heroes in my book.
You can see all the photos by clicking on this. Check out Rhonda Rajsich's dive for the ball at Thursday's (12/8/06) exhibition match with the tournament sponsors by clicking on this. Your CVRA Photographer, Ken

Ghostly Classic Photos - Sunday, November 19, 2006
Have you been looking for the photos taken during the 8th Annual Ghostly Classic? Look no more! Your CVRA photographer is back from two weeks out of town and photos can be found by clicking on this.
Have you ever wondered why I put so many photos on the web? One reason is that I try to include everybody that gets photographed. Another is for educational purposes: the players can see their mistakes and improve, and regular players like myself can look at how the better players hit. For example, look at a series of open player photos and observe how well they keep their eyes on the ball.
Photo webpage enhanced features: Just in time for the holidays, you now have a wider selection of items that can be ordered from the SmugMug web service. Please remember to use the crop feature, however, if you order a print size that is not 4X6, or 8X12.
Happy Thanksgiving, Ken

In the photo, Todd Boss gives $4,000 to Christi of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The donation was raised thanks to the generosity of the tournament players and sponsors. Thanks!
Photos taken during the tournament can be found on our photo web site (click on this to see them). Please take a look because this tournament had one of the best open draws ever! The seeding was exceptionally competitive. Men’s Open included # 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8 of the VA seeds, plus Andy Hawthorne who is #11 on the IRT. Andy, thanks for driving out from OH! Women’s Open seeding was also extremely competitive with the top # 2, 3, 6, and 8 VA seeds. Totally eye candy for the photographer, and I hope you like what you see on the gallery. Getting revved up for the upcoming season - Sunday, August 14, 2005
Hi all,
Just finished doing some photo gallery updates in anticipation of the 2005 / 2006 tournament season. Our CVRA Photo gallery has two new entries. First, a photo gallery from the October 2004 Ghostly Gateway Open has been added that I had inadvertently left out. It must have been a busy month. I was reminded during the April 2005 USA Racquetball Regional Singles Championships, but was in denial then. It is finally finished. How embarrassing! Second, I added a few examples of bad racquetball photos caused by light flicker. We have a few clubs whose lighting flickers at 60 cycles. Our eyes do not see this (we can see 30 cycles but not 60), but the camera does. Flicker makes action photos look bad because a fast shutter speed (1/800 of a second or faster) is required to minimize motion blur (racquetball is a fast sport thus the fast shutter speed). Photo news has been moved to a new place in the CVRA web site, replacing the old gallery. You can find it by clicking “Tournaments” on the CVRA menu and selecting “Photo News”. Otherwise simply click on this to go to the CVRA photo gallery web site.
Finally, two notable tournaments have piqued my interest. State Doubles is scheduled for mid September and the Woman’s Professional Racquetball Organization has a stop in Maryland in October. I’m psyched!

Ken

USAR Regionals at Severna Park Racquetball & Fitness Club MD - Sunday, August 14, 2005
Our 2005 regional tournament was held on April 15-17 in Maryland at the Severna Park Racquetball & Fitness Club. What a fantastic place to have a tournament! The club really knows how to make the racquetball community feel welcome. The event attracted a huge number of competitors, and all eight courts were pressed into overtime to accommodate them. Lots of good food was readily available for all, including the photographer. Steve Graham and the MWRA team did a great job running this challenging event. Thanks! Photos are now available for viewing by clicking on this link.

Virginia Open/All Military Tournament and IRT Pro Stop - Sunday, August 14, 2005
What a thrill to have the IRT in Virginia and what a great host we had at the Greenbrier Family YMCA! It was truly a pivotal event for Virginia Racquetball. Thanks to those who did all the work and fundraising to make it happen. Pro Rep Inc., Malia Bailey, and Jo Ann Chertoff did most of the heavy lifting. Orlando Mayo should also get credit for a great job as master of ceremonies. Many others are also deserving of praise for helping this tournament be the success that it was. Thanks!
As you might expect, your photographer has been busy. Photos are on line and ready for viewing. Just click on this to link to the site. By the way, we have a new feature starting with this event: You can now nominate your favorite photos for the “Best Shots” Gallery. Click on the comments box once you find a photo you like and type away.
See you at the regionals,
Ken

State Singles
A big thank you to Paul Newcomb, Tom Yenkevich, and crew for hosting the Virginia State Singles over the March 4-6th weekend. Great job! I really enjoyed watching some super racquetball while taking 1,769 photos. That was the fun part. Now, after getting rid of the duds, and "processing" the good ones, the gallery is finished! Click on "THIS" to open a new browser to see it. Results are also finished and posted on this (CVRA.org) site. They can be found in the "Tournaments" drop down menu just underneath the CVRA logo. Click on "Past Tournaments" and then click on the link for State Singles. Finally, click on the word "results" located on the right hand side of the State Singles tournament page. That link will take you to the results page. Thank you Karen for doing the results update.
